- seriousness: the seriousness of something considered in terms of its unfavorable consequences
What are the things that weigh me down? What are the things that keep me serious, always considering the “unfavorable consequences” of a decision?
I don’t believe that God intended gravity to have such negative connotations. We need to be grounded, both physically and spiritually, held in place by inexplicable, unseen forces. We need to be serious about life and the choices we make. Guilt, sorrow, fear, regret are all forces that can lead us to repentance, wisdom, respect, better choices.
Gravity was just not supposed to be the sole law that we adhered to. There are other powers at work in our lives and we have been given the ability to circumvent certain laws – like gravity.
Guilt alone only destroys. But mixed with God’s acceptance, His overwhelming love, becomes a place for our hearts to grow soft, our ears to open. Sorrow will only lead to despair if it is not mixed with the joy of heaven, where life is at the source, comfort flows around us. And life is full a fears that would enslave us, deprive us of movement, freedom. But Jesus showed us the way to courage, not without fear but through fear finding a way, the Way, to overcome. Holding on to the knowledge that our sins make us desperately in need of a Savior, and knowing that He came, giving us hope, promise, identity.
God gave us gravity but He also gave us wings.
